My background

I have worked with a variety of mediums—paint, textiles, wire—but my primary focus is drawing: specifically with conte pencils, pencil, charcoal, oil pastels, pastels, and colored pencils. Drawn from my candid photographs, my drawings feature subject matter, mediums, and genres that are often dismissed or minimized, and ask the viewer to engage with fresh eyes.

I began with a BA in English from Carleton College, and an MA in Art History from Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. After school I went on to teach Art History, writing educational materials and looking at and making art with kids and adults of all ages in colleges and museums including The Frick Collection, LACMA, and finally the Norton Simon Museum as Head of Education.

As an art historian and educator, my goal was to change the way people look, to get them to slow down, to see past initial judgements, to talk and to listen, and to engage with art and each other. My project as an artist is to change the way we look, specifically at children and mothers, to reveal them as full people with rich inner lives, as complex individuals reflecting the divine.

I live in Berkeley, CA with my husband, Yoni, a writer, and three sons.
